“No, I cannot forget where it is that I come from.

I cannot forget the people who love me.

Yeah, I can be myself here in this small town

And people let me be just what I want to be.”

John Mellencamp

from his song

“Small Town”

Standing firmly on the banks of the Eel River near Roann, Indiana, the Stockdale Mill welcomes visitors to experience a bygone era and witness the collective efforts of a community to restore a noted landmark. The Stockdale Mill is an old water powered flour mill and dam on the Eel River in north-central Indiana. The mill was purchased in November, 2001 and is in the process of being restored by the STOCKDALE MILL FOUNDATION .

The Roann Coverd Bridge is a massive Howe truss structure that uses two spans to cross the Eel river. The total span is 288 feet, it has an 18 foot clearance height, and is 16 feet wide. It was constructed by the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio, in 1877. The bridge was almost completely distroyed by a fire in 1990. In 1992 the Limberlost Construction Company finished a complete renovation which included a sprinkler system, there being only two other bridges in Indiana thus equipped. Though no historical marker is present, the current Roann Covered Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
